Ashes is out NOW

Three years have past since Ellul released their critically acclaimed self-titled debut. Since then, the band has toured nationally and recently released The Debris, a charity EP for Haitian Earthquake survivors. The album not only raised thousands of dollars for The General's homeland, but also hinted at the new sonic directions explored in Ashes, their latest full length album.

In a world full of snap shot songs, the album Ashes is a motion picture. Musically and emotionally varied, this work is a chronicle of what once was and what might yet be. These are the sounds and textures of loss and restoration. The album was recorded over an intense two year period (2008-2010) for the band. Divorce papers came and went; living situations in flux and identities in question. Ashes tone is atmospheric, lost sometimes in a cloud of unknowing. Lyrically, the duo is completely exposed: exploring issues of loss, deceit and the complete collapse of everything that was once held dear. It's clear Ellul has not stopped asking questions, aware that many will remain unanswered.

With sounds this transparent and personal it's not surprising that Ashes was entirely produced by the Ellul. Taking the torch from Asthmatic Kitty Artist/Producer/friend Chris Schlarb, the band recorded, mixed, and mastered the album at studios all over the San Francisco Bay - most notably at the legendary Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. Ellul has surrendered to the momentum, and is looking forward to move with it.

Album out 10.12.10

Hi.

We are getting everything ready for our album to come out. It's been really busy and exciting getting samples cleared, being on compilations, having an awesome label pick us up to release this album, a show next month (details soon), and the coming of The General's first child. We are busy. Hope we will play some shows after our album drops. It's recommended you do that sort of thing. Soon very soon we will release our first single from the album as well as reveal the album cover to wet the palette.

Interview for Test Press.03

The General was interviewed about "The Debris" ep. Now, because of their efforts to support Partners with Haiti, Epiphyte Records is using this compilation as a benefit release for PWH. Very cool.

We have a release date set for October for the album. Finally. Seriously.

Enjoy.

Review on Skoud.com

Our EP finally got some press. A cool French blog showed some love. The French to English translation is a bit dodgy though. Not just shooting smoke up our ass either!

Google Translation:

An EP dedicated to Haiti

Ellul is a duo electro / ambient San Francisco that the singer is Haitian.  This album is available free, but you can donate a few dollars on their Bandcamp which will be donated to charity for Haiti. Their music is difficult to identify ... . really not trivial. Moving from electro to folk guitar through the ambient difficult to label this group. The construction of tracks and sounds are quite unusual and voice resembles that of the singer of TV On The Radio ". A sort of very successful musical UFO everyone should experience.

More news on our forthcoming album, music video and other treats soon!

Working out the final kinks of album artwork and thinking about playing some shows! It has been a crazy two years with family changes and school. The dust is finally settled (for now) and it seems truly appropriate to get back into gigging regularly. So it's on, right?!?

If I have more to say I'll let you know.

all samples cleared

I woke up today with fire in my belly to get stuff done. First, I met with Bay Area artist John Felix Arnold III to get the ball rolling on our album layout and design. I'm excited to unveil the artwork. Next I contacted the prolific Ken Nordine. We sampled a track of his called, "Manned Space Capsule" off his record, "How Are Things in Your Town?". Now liner notes need to be edited!!!

Onward.
